This brief was to create a book using various techniques of how to layout and bide the finished creation. The first task we were recieved was to choose at random out of the dictionary by flipping the pages and putting down your finger down, which ever word you landed on that was the word you chose for your book theme. In the usual fashion i got a word i'd never heard of before which was Hyperplasia, i thought i might aswell go for it because if i was given a choice of words i wouldn't be able to make up my mind. I began researching into my word which basically was a condition that is from the extreme swelling of glands, i thought this was an interesting theme for my book, it wasn't going to be easy but i'd rather a challenge than a simple word. I read more into the condition then thought mainly on how i was going to write about it without looking like a advice leaflet from a hospital. I went through all the possbitlies and styles of books and liked the idea of a person who lived with this condition writing a journal of his time during treatment. I started looking into journals of people with the condition that were interesting, mainly on how they kept up there normal life, so i started to storyboard just a few pages in the mind of a patient. I didn't want to concentrate too much on the writing, more towards the aethetics of the book, i began researching into popular books and the design of them. After which i started to concentrate on book binding, i explored many different ways and techniques in the dicipline which i enjoyed, i tested many of the ways to bind and came up finally with rough stitching and a particular way of locking the book. I chose this rough stitching because i like the home made feel to my work, i don't often like a clean crisp pieces of work, i enjoy having a bit more character. I used one of the first storyboards i came up with, i was happy with the content and began making the book. I looked into loads of different styles of drawing and one i liked in particular was an artist i saw a while back where he'd scrapbook images then draw on top of them. I then planned out the drawings within my book and tested all the images to make then look presentable yet still have a strong meaning behind them. I also tested alot of materials for my book, as if it was a scrapbook, the materials i used were those that were easy to get hold of and were fairly rough in appearence, for example i used alot scrap newspaper and parcel paper. I was very happy with the final appearence, if i could change anything i would of make the book more stable for use and used alot more text within the book so it was more of a book then a few notes.
