Animation.
This was the last brief we were given was before the summer break, it was an Animation project which i was looking forward to starting. We were given a piece of Music which was a song called Music is Math by Boards of Canada, this brought about loads of ideas as soon as i finished listening to the piece. We had to associate three words with the music that we thought about during it, the slowbeat and erie sound to the piece made me think of time so that beca
me my first word, choosing the second two were a bit harder. I wanted to link all of my words together to make a good basis for my animation, i then came up with two words that i came up with loads of ideas, they were Journey and Anxiety. I then started to storyboards coming into my head, the first ideas i came up were all loosely about a man in a situation they didn't want to be in, wanting to escape so in their head they think of release. I started to really expand upon the idea of wanting to escape, maybe a child
growing up wanting to be free, so i began throwing around ideas of problems in childhood and growing up leaving them all behind, this includes all of my words and links them well. So i started storyboarding and came up with one focus which was a basic drawing of a young b
oy, i also thought up the idea of the storyboard being a diary for the boy and as the music beats on, the diary changes showing different parts of his younger life and as he leaves home he discovers new aspects of life such as university and travelling. I researched alot into animation, from advertisment to freelance design work. I took a great intrest in stock motion animation, i thought that this was a very effective and distinctive way to animate. My research took me to such videos as Yellow Sticky
Notes by Jeff Chiba Stearns and Her Morning EleganceDirected by Oren Lavie, Yuval & Merav Nathan. I tried out a number of ways ot animatings before really testing stop motion and making the decision i wanted my whole movie to be created in this style. My most challenging aspect of this brief was once getting an idea was developing it into a smooth flowing animation, haven't not done animation before i went t
o workshops on aftereffects. I found the programme to be fairly easy and enjoyable to use, the features on this programme were easy to get to grips with so i found this expanded my ideas further. The beginning on my animation shows the room od the young boy and his diary on the desk, within the diary of have drawn pictures showing anxiety in his life, also having cut out various hand drawnimages of him i have subtly changed the size throughout the
animation showing time. The final images of my animation i wanted to show the other ways of anxiety by taking photographs of other people, then as the boys leaves for university i include other images i have drawn associating with travel and time. Finally i end on a close up of a clock speeding through time which i thought fit well with my time flying by images earlier in my animation. I wanted the start of my animation to be as if it was in his room and we were looking in on his work, so i took photo's leading up to his diary and then photographed the diary using a Nikon d40 slr, which was very easy focus and use in general. I had already planned out all of my images and tested them before photographing them so they worked well and all linked together appropriately. I uploaded all of my images onto aftereffects and set the timing of them and certain effects to get the most out my animation. I was pleased with my outcome in the end, however i feel like i needed more time to really make my video flow smoother and also inolve more of my ideas. Next time i want to include more hands on stop motion and use the effects of the programme more, also look into other possible programmes to broaden my range of my techniques.
