The End of The Line.

This is my sketchbook throughout my ‘End of the Line’ project.
Our brief was to design a complete illustrative wrap around cover for the book The End of the Line. This involved creating 3 x illustrations which sequentially relate to each other to narrate the theme of sustainable fishing. The illustrations are to be drawn using coloured inks only. I started researching into the subject of sustainable fishing and what is actually happening in the world of fishing because I had no real idea where to start. Normally I can run a few ideas of the top of my head straight away but with this project I was struggling to be honest. The website that helped me the most was the BBC business news site, this explained the problem, not only what Is happening but how to solve it as well, this helped me begin to role of a few ideas.

I began drawing sketches which started to help my thought progress as I went on, so the research did help me work to a certain extent. My first crit for this project didn’t go to smoothly as I was still very unsure about this project, so I began mark marking with inks, I felt that now I have a few ideas of some sort of imagery then maybe the mark making would open up what I could create and it really did help. I quickly decided on the second colour being red as I thought the blue colour reflects more calm feeling and red, if used properly comes across as a colour of warning. Once I had established a colour I continued mark marking with a number of different materials and tools. This created a lot of images in my head, however I felt as if something was missing so I began scanning in the marks I have made and enlarging a section of the image, this was creating a lot of interesting patterns and shapes. I then began to relate my patterns to images I had found in my research, this began helping me to realise I was liking more of a textured approach than a really detailed approach.I then started drawing out ideas I had floating around, they were becoming more stronger as I went on, I then chose a few of them to develop using my texture I had found and also putting together a few of the images I had gathered. Before I came to any conclusions I looked into a bit more mark marking, however not so much the marks themselves, just how the marks looked on a variety of different material.
I had started to develop quite a lot of ideas before our final crit, while during this i put forward one section of my final idea which proved popular. This turned my final piece on its head, so i then began to develop this idea of a single textured boat with fishing lines coming down which was actually an idea i touched on earlier in my sketchbook. Not really coming to any real conclusions i did loads of test mock ups for my final piece really making sure i created the best wash, the best boat and overall the best layout which i feel like i was very close too however i feel with more time on the project i could of pushed it that little bit more.
